Right, it looks like some uploaders choose blatantly incorrect statements for material that is not actually theirs, so use caution and common sense with what you find here, especially in the Open Source collections.

As a matter of fact, I would advice to avoid the Open Source Movies, if you want to play safe.

My tips would be:
- Prelinger Archives (http://www.archive.org/details/prelinger ), 100 % checked duty-free material
- Feature Films (http://www.archive.org/details/feature_films ), you can be 99 % sure these movies are- at least in the US- public domain in the US.

About Merrie Melodies: be aware that these are Warner Brothers' characters, which are on itself still under copyright. Which means that you must be careful with them, even when the cartoons are public domain.

The vintage cartoon collection should be safe. As long as the Bugs and Co. are not used commercially, or in a derivative work, no royalties are necessary.
